Design for Six Sigma:

DFSS is used to design or re-design a product or service from the ground up.  Many times the output of a DFSS is a product or service that will fit within a companies existing Six Sigma DMAIC methodologies.

Do you have the need to design a new product or service? 
Do you have an existing product or service that is producing waste and not meeting customer requirements?  
Do you have a product or service that produces at a low-level of defects but still isn't meeting customer requirements   (i.e. you've got an existing product, process or service and it has been optimized (using either DMAIC or other) and it still doesn't meet the level of customer specification or six sigma level)?

Design for Six Sigma can aid you if answered yes to any of the above questions.

We'll explore a design/re-design approach called DMADV in the QAI Design for Six Sigma training program along with comparison of DMADVA to other 'design' methods.

Define the project goals and customer (internal and external) requirements.
Measure and determine customer needs and specifications; benchmark competitors and industry.
Analyze the process options to meet the customer needs.
Design (detailed) the process to meet the customer needs.
Verify the design performance and ability to meet customer needs.

The DMADV approach was developed out of recognition that sometimes the DMAIC approach was not powerful enough when faced with product or service design or re-design.

DFSS aids in streamlining the development processes, improves time to market cycles, and bring designs that can actually be implemented.

Anyone involved with design knows that a design change implemented during product or service design phase costs just a fraction of cost of a design change after a product or service is actually in production.

By designing the product or service correctly in the first place can eliminate issues that can arise from an incoorect design (however small the error might be in the design phase).

The DMADV process flow will answer these questions:

What do customers need?
What are metrics employed?
What are the customers requirements?
What are our design alternatives?
How will we demonstrate success?
